Feed the birds >>>

DIY >>> Bird Seed Ornaments

You will need:

3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
1 package of gelatin
3 tbsp. corn syrup
4 cups birdseed
assortment of cookie cutters
cooking spray
plastic straws
parchment or waxed paper
ribbon/twine
scissors
baking sheets

* NOTE: I made a double batch.

Step 1: Mix all the liquid ingredients together in a large bowl.

Step 2 : Add in the flour, mix. Then add in the bird seed. We keep a large bag of bird seed in our garage so I scooped some into a bucket to bring inside. This was easier for the kids to "measure" and dump in the mixing bowl.

The mixture should be clumpy and stiff.

Step 3: Line your baking sheets with the parchment paper. Select your cookie cutters and lay them down. Spray with the cooking spray so the paper is covered inside each shape and also the inside edges.

Step 4: Scoop the mix into each shape. PRESS DOWN to compact the mix inside each shape. I gave my kids a measuring cup and an ice scoop. Both worked well.

Step 5: Cut some plastic straws in half and insert one into each shape, keeping in mind the weight of the shape. I placed mine towards the middle.

Step 6: Let the ornaments dry all day or overnight. Then flip them and let them dry again, for at least 3-4 hours, possibly longer depending on thickness. You will know they are dry when they are hard on each side.

Step 7: Tie with string or ribbon and hang outside on a few branches. Try to catch some birds eating your yummy treats, and maybe a squirrel or too as well!

Have fun!
